It’s back and better than ever! The Houston SPCA is joining forces with Cam Johnston, the Houston Texans‘ Punter, and his wife, Tia, to extend a helping hand to homeless dogs. This heartwarming endeavor took flight in 2020 when Johnston was determined to make a positive impact in the lives of pets within his community. Thus, Punts for Houston SPCA was born! The primary objective is to raise awareness about the advantages of adopting pets, mainly focusing on larger dogs akin to the couple’s beloved rescues, Bella and Buddy.

For every punt that lands inside the 20-yard line during a Texans football game, Johnston and Tia will generously sponsor the adoption fee for a dog in need. So far, the two have covered adoption fees for over 100 dogs!

If you visit our Adoption Center, make sure to look for the dogs with the Texans Kennel Card.

Every year, as the seasons transition and the landscape transforms, a phenomenon of immense significance occurs in the natural world. Wildlife migration season is a spectacle that highlights the perseverance and adaptability of various species. While this annual event may seem inspiring, it’s essential to grasp the underlying reasons and significance behind this extraordinary journey for many creatures.

Wildlife migration often stems from various factors, predominantly around the need for survival and sustenance. For many species, including birds, mammals, and more, the seasonal shift prompts a search for better feeding grounds, mating opportunities, or more hospitable climates. For instance, certain bird species migrate to avoid harsh winters, seeking warmer climates where food is more plentiful, while others migrate for mating purposes.

While wildlife migration season can be a breathtaking sight, we must be mindful of our impact on these creatures and their journey. Human activities, including deforestation, pollution, and habitat destruction, often disrupt these migration routes, leading to dire consequences for the animals.

Moreover, during migration season, it’s crucial to avoid disrupting the natural flow of wildlife. One way we can help migrants on their journey is by reducing overnight lighting, especially in tall buildings. When migrants are passing over big cities, the bright lights can cause them to become disoriented, causing them to crash into buildings or windows. Thus, Audubon’s Light Out Program was formed in an effort to reduce this problem.

Other ways to help include refraining from excessive noise, limiting outdoor activities in sensitive areas, and being cautious while driving, especially in areas known for high animal movement. By respecting their migratory paths and natural habitats, we can ensure the safety and well-being of these remarkable species.

Similar to humans, migratory birds require rest stops. For example, Houston is part of the Central Flyway bird migration group. Therefore, during migration season, we get a lot of visitors making a pitstop as they travel south for the winter.

At the Wildlife Center of Texas, we play a pivotal role in protecting and rehabilitating wildlife during migration seasons. In the course of their journey, some migratory birds might sustain injuries. Our rescue and rehabilitation program is dedicated to ensuring their well-being and preparing them to continue their migration safely. Our initiatives not only help injured or distressed animals but also raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation among local communities.

As individuals, we can support these endeavors by volunteering, donating, or participating in educational programs. Additionally, we can take personal steps to reduce our ecological footprint, such as minimizing plastic usage, supporting sustainable practices, and advocating for wildlife-friendly policies in our communities.

Wildlife migration season serves as a poignant reminder of the incredible resilience and adaptability of the natural world. Understanding the motivations behind these awe-inspiring journeys and taking necessary precautions to safeguard these creatures are essential steps in preserving the delicate balance of our ecosystem. By actively supporting conservation efforts, we can ensure a sustainable future for wildlife and humanity. Let us all pledge to be conscientious custodians of our planet, preserving its wonders for future generations.

Halloween, a festive time filled with costumes, candy, and spooky decorations, is a cherished celebration for many. However, amidst the excitement, it’s crucial to consider the potential impacts on the environment and wildlife. With some thoughtfulness and simple adjustments, we can ensure that our Halloween festivities do not come at the cost of harming our wildlife.

The best way to keep squirrels and other wildlife safe on Halloween is by not leaving any harmful treats out that they can reach.

The best way to protect wildlife this Halloween season is by choosing environmentally friendly decorations that can be reused or recycled. Instead of plastic decorations, consider using biodegradable options or create decorations from recycled materials. By embracing sustainable options, we can prevent the accumulation of non-biodegradable waste that can harm wildlife habitats.

Avoid decorations with closed holes or loops. This limits the possibility of animals getting caught. Also, avoid decorations with small or dangling pieces that might look edible to wildlife. Be cautious of the use of fake spider webs, as they can be very dangerous to owls.

When driving, in addition to watching out for Trick or Treaters, be cautious of the Raccons or Opossums that may find themselves out in the streets due to being spooked.

If you decorate with pumpkins, be aware that it could attract wildlife. After the celebrations, compost your pumpkins to prevent them from ending in landfills. Additionally, be mindful of the candles used in Jack-o’-Lanterns, opting for LED lights instead to reduce the risk of fire hazards and protect wildlife from potential harm.

Lastly, Please do not leave candy where animals can get to it, and adequately discard wrappers.

As we indulge in the Halloween spirit, remember it’s our responsibility to protect our wildlife. By making mindful choices in our decorations and treats, we can ensure that our celebrations positively impact our wildlife!

The Weimar Police Department recently called upon the Houston SPCA to rescue 44 dogs from a property off CR 202 in Weimar, Texas. The rescue operation was initiated following the execution of a civil seizure warrant yesterday. Most of the dogs were housed outside in unsuitable conditions, surrounded by urine and feces, and without access to fresh water. Further investigation led authorities to discover additional dogs hidden within a nearby abandoned trailer filled with heaps of garbage, debris, and fecal matter.

Following their rescue, all the dogs are currently under the care of the Houston SPCA, receiving personalized veterinary attention. A pending hearing next week will determine the legal custody of the animals, ensuring their well-being and safety. Notably, under Texas law, animal cruelty is considered a felony, carrying a potential penalty of up to two years of imprisonment and a fine of $10,000.

The dedicated 11-member animal cruelty investigations team at the Houston SPCA collaborates closely with law enforcement agencies in the broader Houston region, including the HPD, Harris County Precinct 1 Constable’s Office, and nine other neighboring Texas counties. Members of the public are encouraged to report any instances of animal cruelty by calling 713.869.7722 or submitting information online HERE.

The Houston SPCA, in collaboration with the Harris County Pct. 1 Constable’s office, responded to a disturbing report of animal abuse involving an English Bulldog on Monday.

This incident was captured on a Ring doorbell camera, revealing the owner kicking the one-year-old dog and then callously lifting the 50-pound dog by one of its back legs, tossing it across the walkway.

Upon arrival with a civil seizure warrant to rescue the bulldog, officials also discovered two French Bulldogs confined in a small wire kennel, soaked in urine and feces.

Jay Chase, Chief Cruelty Investigator at The Houston SPCA, emphasized the importance of reporting animal cruelty, stating, “If you are able to safely obtain photos or video to report animal cruelty, it can be very useful against those who dare to commit these crimes in public view.” Reporting cruelty can save lives.

All three dogs are now safely in the care of the Houston SPCA while this case is presented before a judge on Wednesday.

It’s essential to remember that subjecting animals to abuse and neglect is considered animal cruelty, and it’s a felony in the state of Texas, punishable by up to two years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

In Harris County, the Houston SPCA’s dedicated 11-member animal cruelty investigation team collaborates with the Harris County Pct. 1 Constable’s Office and other law enforcement agencies to combat animal cruelty. They extend their assistance across nine surrounding counties, rescuing victims of animal cruelty throughout the region. If you witness animal cruelty, please call 713-869-7722 or CLICK HERE.

Finding a lost pet can be a heartwarming yet challenging experience. These lost or abandoned animals need our help, and our actions can significantly impact their lives.

Before approaching a lost animal, it’s essential to prioritize yours and the animal’s safety. Lost animals can be scared, injured, or aggressive. Approach slowly and calmly to avoid startling them. If available, try approaching with a leash or a carrier. Do not force contact. Give the animal space and time to come to you if it feels comfortable.

Once you’ve ensured safety, assess the animal’s condition. Look for any visible injuries, signs of illness, or distress. Note their body condition, coat condition, and any signs of malnutrition. Pay attention to the animal’s behavior and demeanor. Fearful, aggressive, or overly friendly behavior can indicate different needs.

If the lost animal is injured or in distress, call our Injured Animal Ambulance at 713-880- HELP (4357)
If the lost animal seems in good condition, please contact your local Animal Control and patiently await their guidance and instructions.

In the meantime, provide temporary shelter and care if you can safely handle the animal. Lost animals are often hungry and thirsty. Provide some food and water if you have it. If you have a garage, spare room, or a safe outdoor area, set up a space where the animal can stay temporarily.

Next, check if the animal has any identification tags with contact information. Most veterinary clinics and shelters can scan for microchips, which may have the owner’s information.
To view our found animal listings, click here. If the animal isn’t listed on the page, please submit a lost pet report and explore our additional resources.

Finding a lost animal can be a rewarding experience as you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on their life. Remember to prioritize safety, assess the animal’s condition, and contact the Houston SPCA for assistance. By following these steps, you can ensure that the lost animal receives the care and support it needs while increasing the chances of a happy reunion with its owner or finding a new loving home.

On Wednesday, 49 exotic cats, including Bengal and Asian Leopard cats, were surrendered to the Houston SPCA. This came in the wake of the owner’s recent passing. Among these animals was a group of Bengal kittens only four weeks old, alongside a single dog and two domestic cats. These animals had been enduring deplorable living conditions on a property in Alvin, Texas. They have since been relocated to the Houston SPCA campus, where they will receive personalized care and attention.

In March, the Houston SPCA carried out a similar mission, rescuing 19 exotic cats, including a litter of Bengal kittens. At that time, these animals were discovered living in dire circumstances. Following their rescue, they received medical treatment for gastrointestinal and respiratory ailments. The Asian leopard cats were eventually relocated to sanctuaries, while the Bengal cats found new, loving homes.

If you suspect an animal has been subjected to animal cruelty, call 713-869.7722 or file a report HERE.
